It's Mario's Birthday

Our beloved dockmaster Mario celebrates a birthday today. His is no easy job, to be up early and as the dock every day making sure the boats have what they are supposed to have, to greet the anglers, take care of paperwork and be there when they get back in the afternoon. He has juggled as many as 100 boats in a day, so he has to know what he is doing. So how does he keep a smile on his face.....well take a look at who he gets to work with... a lot of cool girls as well as the captains and mates. HAPPY BIRTHDAY MARIO; we are not saying how many it is.

Cabos Smallest Sailfish!

Chris Fuller, Ruben Orantes & Rob Lawford Pose with a 3 lb Sailfish

Rob Lawford captain of "Petrolero" called us today to tell us about his unique catch this past Saturday. He was fishing close to the Iman Bank just east of La Fortuna looking for tuna. They were using live sardines as bait and fishing with 40 lb leader and size 2 circle hooks, when their bait got bit by what they thought was a needlefish, according to one of the crew, but Rob insisted "you know I think it's a sailfish", sure enough as it got closer to the boat, putting on an incredible aerobatic display, they realized that it was definitely a tiny sailfish. This is when the importance of circle hooks is clearly illustrated; the hook did its job, catching in the corner of the mouth, not damaging any soft tissue and not being swallowed - after a brief five minutes on the line and posing for the paparazzi, the tiny sailfish was successfully released.  Pisces has been using live bait exclusively with cirlce hooks for the past three years now in an attempt to lower fish mortality rates.

Striped Marlin Release Video

Pisces Weekly Fish Report August 20th to 26th

Overall Catch Success Rate 62%

BILLFISH: Water is still hot 86 to 88 F, which is quite normal for this time of year; clouds gathered on the horizon turning the air humid but no rain was produced. Live bait was on the scarce side, which may have been a factor in less striped marlin catches, but again, this is the time of year when we see a dip on this species and should see more action on blues and blacks. “La Brisa” caught and released 2 striped marlin for Dirk and Tricia Rachfall from Westminster B.C. and landed a very nice 30 lbs dorado for a lovely dinner. On the 24th, “Ruthless” released the only sailfish of the week as well as a striped marlin and kept 20 lbs dorado for Matt & Heather Adamson from Middleton, TX – both of these groups were repeat clients that always seem to do well. Forty six percent of our boats caught billfish, a total of 7 striped marlin and one sailfish, all released.

OTHER SPECIES: Tuna catches are on the slow side, but when caught tended to have a better size than the norm, with most being over 30 lbs and the largest was a150 lb species caught by Harvey Rosen & Mort Perchick from New York aboard the “Bill Collector” they hooked this large tuna 30 miles out from the Old Lighthouse on the Pacific Side. Dorado were mostly absent at the start of the week, but by Wednesday the catches changed with most boats catching between six and nine ranging from 25 to 45 lbs. Some skipjack made an appearance and “Rebecca” caught a 30 lbs wahoo along with 7 dorados and one striped marlin released for our good friend Dr. Gary Allison from Henderson, NV.

Pisces Weekly Fish Report August 13th to 19th

Overall Catch Success Rate 68%

BILLFISH: Full moon combined with 88F waters are giving anglers a hard time. Many clients report they are watching the marlin jump out the water and even play with the bait but they are just not biting. Still, “Shambala” went kite fishing and managed to catch and release one Sailfish and one Striped marlin for Johnny Mac Powers from Rockwall, TX on August 13th. After that it got pretty slow for billfish, until the 17th when “Adriana” released a Blue Marlin estimated at 250 lbs and landed 9 Dorados between 25 to 44 lbs for Javier Guzman from Ynez, CA. And on the 18th, “Great Escape” caught a 350lbs Blue Marlin, the angler fought for over an hour and used a petrolero lure. This week only 30% of the boats caught billfish, a total of 4 striped marlin, one sailfish and two blue marlin, only one was kept by the angler.

OTHER SPECIES: On small game, tuna catches keep dropping as the season ends until they come back later on the year, on the other side, dorado keeps getting better with over 76% of the boats catching this gorgeous and delicious fish. We had some great catches this week, on August 15th, Dylan Allman (age 9) from Stamford CT caught a 25 lbs dorado and a 65 lbs Wahoo. Fish was caught outside the Old Lighthouse with a grey/green lure. It took him 20 minutes to boat the fish. Same day “CROD” caught a 154 lbs yellowfin tuna for Steve, Heather & Patrick Sack from Chicago IL, they fought for the fish for over 3 hours on 30 lbs test line. We had a couple of rooster fish closer to shore but no other species caught.

LOCATION: Punta Gorda, Destiladeras, Herradura, 11:50, Los Arcos, San Jaime.

WEATHER CONDITIONS: 91F feels like 105, clear skies.

Wahoo 62 lbs Caught by 9 1/2 year old boy

With summer here and the kids off school a lot of parents are looking for a place to take the kids, not too expensive, not too far, lots of outdoor adventure and safe....guess that's why they came up with Cabo, which paid off for 9 1/2 year old Dylan Allman from Stamford, CT who caught an impressive 62 lbs Wahoo today aboard the "Tracy Ann". Fish was caught outside the Old Lighthouse with a grey/green lure. It took him 20 minutes to boat the fish. Seeing as Dylan caught the fish, he gets the spotlight alone first but here he is shown with proud mom and dad.
The Allman family were not the only ones having fun in Cabo, the Sack family from Chicago had their work cut out for the today board "  C Rod" after they hooked a brutish tuna on 30 lb test, 30 miles off of the Old Lighthouse on a live caballito. It too them three hours to bring in this 154 lb yellowfin  - now that's team work!

Perfect End To The Day

These two lovely Texan ladies went out on a panga the other day and did really well catching a marlin and a dorado.  We had the dorado delivered to Captain Tony's who do an excellent job as always. Fish prepared several ways, a crisp salad and their signature mesquite oven foccacia.

Pisces Weekly Fish Report July 23rd to July 29th, 2011

Overall Catch Success Rate 90%

BILLFISH: Hot, hot, hot, hot, this week felt like popcorn in the microwave, one more degree and we would have gone puff! The “storm” we had scheduled for last week didn’t bring anything but heat and little bit of wind on the 23rd so the authorities decided to close the port that day leaving nothing but frustrated fisherman as the seas were perfectly fit for fishing. Anyway, we had a great start this week, we saw a lot of tuna and dorado flags and a few billfish. “Tracy Ann” released one pacific sailfish estimated at 100lbs and a striped marlin at 140lbs and landed 2 dorados, one of them of 44lbs for our good friends Leocadio Perez and Whadzen Carrasquillo from Puerto Rico. Then on the 26th “Tracy Ann” caught a 180lbs Blue, 3 tunas, one dorado and released a striped marlin for Michael McKown from Star, ID and Rick Martin from Neenah, WI. Hold on ladies, its Rick, not Ricky Martin. The next day “Ruthless” caught a 250lbs Blue for Tim Dold from Annapolis MD, also released a striped marlin and landed one Dorado and one tuna for his father David Dold. This week 40% of the boats caught billfish, a total of 10 striped marlin, 8 were released, 3 pacific sailfish, all released and 2 blue marlin were kept by the clients.
OTHER SPECIES: Very good week for dorado, 77% of the boats caught at least one, best caches were for “La Brisa” with 7 Dorados between 12-16lbs for Steve Murray and Paul Smulhante from Los Angeles, CA, and for the “C-ROD” with 7 dorados 15-20lbs and 8 skipkacks for the Gallardo Family from Mexico City. Tuna catches droped a little with only 37% of the fleet catching this specie, however we had some nice catches, on the 24th “Adriana” landed 14 yellowfin between 20-30lbs for Kraig Willett from San Diego, CA, can’t imagine how many BBQ’s he’s gonna throw at home. On the inshore, pangas were catching roosterfish, skipjack, dorado and few yellowfin tuna.

LOCATION: Fish seem to be scattered, boats were fishing from Destiladeras at San Jose del Cabo, all the way to Golden Gate at the Pacific Side. Hot spots in between were Herradura, Chileno Bay, 95spot, Los Arcos, Morro Prieto.

WEATHER CONDITIONS: Hot and sunny.

AVERAGE WATER TEMP: 81 to 83F

BEST LURES: Purple lures, live bait, cedar plugs.
